QUESTION:   After an Earthquake are you prepared to evacuate with your pets?

Post 16 explained how to create your pet's Grab & Go Kit – like us they will need basic items to survive after an earthquake.  I hope you have put your pet’s Grab & Go Kit together – they are counting on you!

Presenting an Earthquake Preparedness Session at a Lunch and Learn last week a woman asked me what if you couldn’t take your pet with you when you are forced to evacuate.  Should you just leave your pets behind?  A great question and it brought me back to a story I heard from a forest fire a few years back.

A family had been advised to evacuate their home due to a fast approaching forest fire. During a previous evacuation a few years back for another fire, they had been away from their home for only a night so they expected to repeat their short-term evacuation experience again this time.

Rather than take their old dog with them, they decided it would be better to leave him in his dog run.  They believed he would be more comfortable as he had shelter and plenty of food and water.

During the night the fire changed direction and roared through their property. Sadly, their dog did not survive.   As you can imagine the family was devastated.  They had truly thought they were doing the best thing for their dog but everything went terribly wrong.

As pet lovers our hearts go out to this family - they made a bad decision which they will live with for the rest of their lives. How could you ever forgive yourself?

As heart wrenching as this is you can certainly learn from this so it won’t happen to you.

BE PREPARED TO TAKE YOUR PETS WITH YOU WHEN YOU EVACUATE.

There were similar stories from Hurricane Katrina and other disasters around the world where people were not allowed to take their pets with them when they were evacuated.  People refused to evacuate without their pets and both the people and pets lost their lives.

Today - people are being encouraged to take their pets with them when being evacuated and with some simple planning it will be much easier when you have your plans in place prior to the earthquake.

When facing an earthquake you may need to evacuate your home especially if you have damage. Once you are out of your home you don’t know if you will be allowed back in.  There could be aftershocks that cause damage or you could be faced with a house or apartment fire - all of which could prevent you from safely returning to get your pet.

Always take your pets with you when evacuating!

You’re Task for Week #17

Some things to consider prior to facing an evacuation:
  • Have the contact number of local kennels, vets etc. that can provide boarding.
  •  Have the supplies your pet will need in their Grab & Go Kits. See last week’s blog 16 for detailed lists or use the check list in My Earthquake Preparedness Guide
  •  If you have a cat they can often be difficult to put into a cat carrier.  A vet friend suggested putting your cat in a pillow case and this may help calm them down.  As crazy as it sounds I have seen this work.
  •  Train your pet to go into the carrier.
  • Have a list of hotels that will allow pets.
  •  Remember – life safety always comes first. Don’t put your life in danger to rescue a pet.

Week 18 we will look at seniors and disasters.

Have questions – don’t hesitate to ask. Until next week – Stay safe and make sure you, your family and pets are prepared for earthquake or any disaster that may come your way.

As I am writing this post I am keeping close tabs on the Taiwan Earthquake and the events that are unfolding from this tragic earthquake.  The devastation facing many  people who live there is beyond words and we can only imagine the pain and suffering they are facing.  For many - loved ones have been lost, livelihoods changed and the uncertainly of what lies ahead for the people of Taiwan. My heart and prayers go out to all of them and their families.

For those of us here – we need to learn from these tragic events - this is yet another wakeup call to the fact on the West Coast we live in an area that is overdue for a massive Earthquake and we too could be facing what the people of Taiwan are facing. We ALL need to be prepared for Earthquakes and we need to do it NOW!!!

QUESTION:  Are you pet’s part of your Family Earthquake Plan?

Throughout the year I conduct earthquake preparedness sessions for people who have pets teaching them how to prepare their families and pets.  Often these sessions fill up faster than the regular Earthquake Preparedness Sessions and  have lengthy waitlists.

Clearly this show – Pets are family too and  need to be part of our Family’s Earthquake Plan.

Imagine – you are forced to evacuate your home.  You will certainly want to take your pets with you, but do you have the supplies they need ready to go?  Believe me - when facing a disaster you may not even have time to think what your pet or yourself will need. You need to be ready to go before facing a disaster.

Think back to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 which impacted millions of people.  News broadcasts showed countless stories of people and pets losing their lives simply because families were not allowed to take their pets with them when evacuating.  Since Hurricane Katrina we have seen a change where people can now take their pets with them on buses or into shelters when evacuating.

This is a great step forward but as responsible pet owners we need to do our part as well. The key to better surviving an earthquake or disaster with your pets is to be prepared.  Simply start by having a Pet Grab & Go Kit.

Just like us our pets will need basic items to better survive the disaster. You must create a Grab & Go Kit for them containing basic items they will need.  There is NOT a one size fits all for Pet Earthquake Kits.

Preparing a large dog compared to a small cat is like comparing apples and oranges. You need to think this through and identify your pet’s needs.

BASIC GRAB & GO KIT ITEMS - for Dogs and Cats

  • Pet food – wet food is better
  • Can Opener
  • Water
  • Non – Spillable Bowls
  • Toy
  • Treats
  • Blanket
  • Plastic bags (waste disposal)
  • First aid kit
  • Paper towels
  • Copy of vet records
  • Medications and dosages
  • Photo of your pet (alone and one with you)
  • Other items your pet may need

DOG KIT - GRAB & GO ITEMS

  • Leash
  • Muzzle
  • Collar with pouch to put name and contact info
  • Other items your pet may need

CAT Kit - GRAB & GO ITEMS

  • Non – clumping Kitty Litter
  • Tray for litter
  • Pillow Case (more on this next week)
  • Other items your cat may need

OTHER PETS

While dogs and cats may be our more common types of pets there are a lot of other pets out there. Similar to what is covered with Dogs and Cats you will need to create a kit to support your pet whatever your pet is.
